Telephone communication of the future! Google acquires GrandCentral Communications - Integrate telephone numbers and voice mailboxes for Web access!

A video demo from the Conference Fall 2006 San Diego. GrandCentral's CEO, Craig Walker, presents GrandCentral.com.

Google has announced the purchase of Grand Central, which offers an innovative solution to managing your phone numbers and voice mailboxes. A highlight from the Google Blog post:
GrandCentral offers many features that complement the phone services you already use. If you have multiple phone numbers (e.g., home, work, cell), you get one phone number that you can set to ring all, some, or none of your phones, based on who's calling. This way, your phone number is tied to you, and not your location or job. The service also gives you one central voice mailbox. You can listen to your voicemails online or from any phone, forward them to anybody, add the caller to your address book, block a caller as spam, and a lot more. You can even listen in on voicemail messages from your phone while they are being recorded, or switch a call from your cell phone to your desk phone and back again. All in all, you'll have a lot more control over your phones.

GrandCentral is an innovative service that lets users integrate all of their existing phone numbers and voice mailboxes into one account, which can be accessed from the web.

This innovative concept is set to revolutionize the way we will communicate by voice in the future! Imagine the ease and flexibility offered by consolidating all your voice accounts through to one simple interface and switch between cellphones, landlines, etc. A logical next step, no doubt, but still...absolutely amazing!

After reading a recent article in Conde Nast Portfolio regarding Google, I would tend to agree that Google will be a major mover and shaker in the telecom field. Google has planned to make the opening bid on the soon to be vacant UHF spectrum in 2009 after the FCC mandate requiring all local television broadcasting to be in High Definition takes effect.

The threat for wireless carriers could be huge, as unlocked handsets that are able to operate on a Wi-Fi connection could potentially operate on this spectrum.

Hoteliers could also benefit from this, as walkie-talkies and perhaps even the Wi-Fi enabled communication systems could be supplanted by a guest service, catering and maintenance voice communication that is more readily available to a wide range of property sizes. The key potential here is that a large savings in capital outlay could manifest through use of the UHF frequency in hospitality applications. My personal interest is in using the capabilities of voice technology to further personalize the guest experience as they arrive at the property.

Watch out for Google and for further breakthrough technology in voice communications and integration in the next few years.
