The job application process - Tips on professional conduct

by Jeff Ross

Written Communication

  • Ensure you check your email as often as you can – increasingly employers are emailing potential candidates firstly to save time and cost, and secondly to test time and quality of responses.
  • Always ensure your emails are professional, and take your time to ensure you have fully read any email request that you receive, and that you answer in full to all points.
  • Always send an email cover note or a cover letter for every job application you make. Never just send your CV without any covering letter or email, as it will more than likely just be deleted.
  • Do not apply for a job where you clearly do not meet the requirements that they list. Not only will this waste the employers time, but it will frustrate them, and they will be less likely to consider you for another role in the future

Professional Conduct – During recruitment

  • Think prior to starting a job for how long you should commit to the role, and ensure stick to this. Be very aware of the negativity that is created from a CV that has a lot of movement and instability.
  • When you do leave a role, try to obtain a written reference. This will be useful for you in future job applications. Where a short stay has occurred, try to have a good reason for this put in the CV (if true!) in order to appease any concerns of a future employer.
  • Ask people before you use them as a reference contact.

Professional Conduct – During employment

  • Once you start a role, ensure you take time to learn the job and to find out as much as possible before you start to try to make big decisions or changes.

  • Spend as much time and effort as you can on getting to know the brand/product/facilities of the WHOLE operation, not just your department.
  • Get to know your entire team as quickly as you can and make the extra effort yourself to speak to everyone and find out about them, especially if you are supervising or managing that team.
  • Never treat a colleague or subordinate in any way that you yourself would not like to be treated.
  • Impress your boss at all times! Show your potential by constantly giving your best and showing what you can do. Learn to do this in a way that does not alienate your peers and you will go far!
