Hotel School Review: Swiss School of Tourism & Hospitality (SSTH / SSH / HTF) Passugg and Chur Switzerland

Living at SSH
The Swiss School head office is located in Chur, the capital of the canton, or state, of Graubünden. Graubünden itself has a long tradition when it comes to
hospitality and tourism. It is the home of world-famous resort areas such as St.Moritz, Davos and Klosters, and Graubünden has been named “the holiday corner of
Switzerland”. For those of you who remember a famous children’s story about a young Swiss girl called Heidi, you will find her home in the small area ‘Heidiland’,
just around the corner from Chur.
Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland- first settled 5000 years ago. Located about 120 kilometres from Zurich, Chur is easy and quick to reach as it is on
both the mainline railway and the motorway system. Where better to study hospitality and tourism management than in the place where it all began!
The school hotel where you will live and study is approximately 10 minutes outside of Chur, in a village called Passugg, with spectacular views to Chur itself and the surrounding mountains. With public transport you easily reach down town and also nearby holiday resorts for all kinds of sport and relaxation opportunities.
Facilities
In the school building there is a unique blend of the classical and the modern, with the Belle Époque School Hotel linked with a state-of the art classroom facility. The school hotel itself is a very traditional former spa
hotel and is 120 years old. Within the last few years the student bedrooms, the dining room, à la carte restaurant and public restaurant, and the various
kitchens and student recreation areas, have all been renovated. They are now shining with up-dated modern facilities.
The 8 classrooms are modern, light and airy, with large windows and pleasant views. All are equipped with state-of the art facilities. An auditorium and
computer room are also in the same classroom block. In addition, you will develop your practical culinary and service skills, in a real-life situation, using the up to date facilities of our operational kitchens and dining rooms.
With a wireless card your can access and use internet on the whole campus, and computers with printer are available 24 hours a day.
The school hotel houses a games/relaxation room, a lounge area, an in-house cinema, and a student operated bar/discotheque. A solarium is also available for a small charge. Vending machines for drinks and snacks are located near the lounge area and the games room area.
Library
A compact and well organised library is available for all students, with the following publications available:
Fiction: various novels in English (and a small collection in other languages) including crime, action, thriller, and romance.
Specialised books: including Geographic/Travel/ Languages/Computer-IT
Tourism and Hospitality: technical literature on food and wine, and books on subjects from all areas of hospitality, plus industry related magazines and
newspapers in English and in German.
You will find some magazines; newspapers and books in languages other than English or German, and a selection of DVDs (movies) are available to borrow.
Accommodation
During the academic semesters you live at the school hotel. Included in the semester package fee is accommodation in a standard double room, with hot and
cold running water in each room. Bath or shower and toilet facilities are available near each room, and these facilities are shared with about six other
students. The rooms are all furnished comfortably and practically and students often add some personal decorations. Many rooms have lovely views of the
mountains or over the town of Chur. You can request a different category of room, for a surcharge, if you prefer not to stay in standard double room. There
are, for example, a number of double rooms with bath/toilet facilities included, and also single rooms in various categories. These rooms can be requested using the room request form, and are offered subject to availability.
Meals
Full board is provided and is included in the semester package fee. This is on the basis of breakfast and a 3 course lunch and dinner on week days,
breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and dinner on Sunday. Every Sunday, in the late morning, a breakfast brunch/buffet is offered for a small extra payment.
A well equipped student kitchen, with its own dining area, is also available. Located by the games room and student bar/discotheque, this can be popular at
weekends. Students are able to enjoy preparing their own food speciality meal for themselves, and their friends, if they wish.
Paulaners restaurant, open to the public, is situated in the school hotel building. Here is a place to take a break from the school; to have a coffee or snack or even a meal at weekends for a change.
Dress Code
During week days you are required to be formally dressed for business. Ladies wear a dark blazer/jacket with a dark skirt or trousers, and with a white or
light coloured shirt/blouse. Ladies shoes should be black or dark blue. Gentlemen wear a dark suit with a white or light coloured shirt and tie, and shoes should be black.
You must always appear neat and tidy, just as your future professional position will require.
Of course in your evening free time and at weekends professional dress code does not apply.
Activities
The location of the school within Graubünden is perfect for almost any kind of sport and free time activity. Well known holiday resorts such as Arosa,
Klosters, Davos, Lenzerheide and Flims-Laax-Falera, to mention only a few, are located close to the school, and they offer a huge choice of free time and sports activities in summer and winter. If you are interested in culture you will find museums, galleries, theatres and other cultural institutions offering interesting and exciting programs.
School in-house free time and sports program:
Once or twice a week an evening sports program is organised. The program always depends very much on the wishes of the students and favourites are clear:
Football, basketball and volleyball.
During each semester a student team is responsible for the organisation of a sports day. Skiing, tobogganing or hiking are on the program in winter, with
hiking and various other sportive activities taking place in summer.
Internal parties are an important social activity, bringing variation to the daily school hotel life of our students. A bar team, made up of students, organises a party or bar night twice or three times per week in the unique purpose built students bar/discotheque in the school hotel. Theme nights are popular and so is Friday night in the student bar- relaxation after a week of
school work. Of course you can always watch a movie in our own "in-house cinema", and internet is always there.
Sport Centre Obere Au, Chur
As a student of Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality you are allowed to use most of the facilities of the local Sport Centre ‘Obere Au’ for free. This includes: indoor and outdoor swimming pool, fitness area, artificial ice rink and Sauna. To use the solarium, the massage or the group fitness classes,
students have to pay the official prices.
